Mme Tristan Powell, B.Ed Elementary (PSC TFI)
I am an enthusiastic educator specializing in Early Learning in beautiful British Columbia, Canada. I have been fortunate to provide ongoing support to the University of Victoria's Faculty of Education as well as the student teacher community of British Columbia through providing professional development, and opportunities for conversation through my roles on the Education Students Association and with #BCStuTeach.
After completing my three practicae (two in early primary, one in middle school), I took on the position of French teacher at the Pacific School of Innovation and Inquiry and Elizabeth Buckley School. My role here was to provide a well-rounded French as a Second Language program for students in grades 6-12 from a variety of backgrounds. I accomplished this task by creating three programs to be shared between the schools - a traditional Core French curriculum for the middle school, a game-based program aimed to accommodate my French 9/10 students, and a French immersion program for my Francophone and immersion students at both schools. I endeavour to personalize learning opportunities as much as possible and aimed to connect them with Francophone culture and community as a primary vehicle for communication.
At the same time, I taught primary grades at dual-track public French immersion schools. Science, Music, Art and Social Learning have been the subjects nearest to my heart. One of my passion projects is a language-based program I started developing in 2015 based on the Zones of Regulation. I am particularly proud of this initiative, as my students over time became able to identify their own zones and practice strategies to help them focus in their classroom. This whole project was done with an emphasis on oral language development in French immersion, which enabled my students to begin speaking more and with greater vocabulary in their classroom discussions.
My primary topics of inquiry and sharing are primary French immersion, student teacher experiences and educational technology. In my Masters, I am exploring the benefits of a Montessori education in a second-language setting.
I am the proud owner of two dogs, three cats, and an ever-changing number of chickens. I live with my family on a three-acre hobby farm in Central Saanich. I enjoy baking bread, supporting new and student teacher inquiries, and just about anything with strawberries. Among my favourite travel experiences was a four-day weekend in Winnipeg, where I celebrated the Festival du Voyageur by skating on the Red River and ate at least three maple taffy sticks (as well as a bite of a bison burger).
Do I sound like the teacher you are looking for? I am always looking for new opportunities, and would love to learn about your school or district.
